Travertine tiles – know more about them

November 15, 2011

When it comes to buying stone products for your yard, garden or residential use, travertine tiles are one of the most preferred options. These stones have been in use since many years now. Travertine tiles are widely used for the tiling and construction industry. While many people think that the Coliseum in Rome is made from marble, it is not so. In fact, it is completely made from travertine tiles.

Travertine is actually a type of sedimentary rock. It is formed due to the water evaporation from hot spring pools. As the water gets evaporated, mineral layers are left behind which gives out stones of beautiful shades. The hues of these tiles range from fiery red and dark mahogany to soft browns. Based on the addition of minerals during travertine formation, these tiles can be found in numerous accenting colours.

Travertine tiles can be used for several different purposes in homes. These tiles are a good flooring option and most common in foyers. In order to protect staining, a special seal coating is required for the travertine tiles. Being a sedimentary rock, travertine tiles have air pockets and small pores that allow the staining materials to enter inside the structure. This is why, it is important to ensure that the surface is properly enclosed.

Worktops or countertops, accent and trim pieces and back splashes are mostly made from travertine tiles. As these tiles are quite lighter compared to the marble, they can easily be applied to the wall. For worktop or counter top use, it is recommended to go for filled tiles. As the name suggest, filled tiles have voids and holes filled with materials that blends well with the tile colour. So, if you want to give a stylish and appealing look to your home, using travertine tiles will be a wise decision.
